upgrade your BIOS? don't go to www.esupport.com

Here's what happened. There was an option to set my mother board clock to 133 MHZ. The board would not boot however when I set it to 133 MHz. I wanted this for a 266 MHz Front side bus frequency for a new CPU.
www.esupport.com has a program called BIOS agent. You run it and it submits info on you mother board CPU etc.... I did this. They say call them. I did. I was told a new BIOS would fix the problem of not being able to have a 133 clock frequncy. Well, guess what? I install their new BIOS. Now 133 MHz is not even available as an option any more.
So, I emailed Tech support and customer service. After 5 emails back and forth, with me telling them 133 MHz was no longer an option. They ask "then why did you order it" ? I replied "because it didn't work at the time and I was told the new BIOS would fix the problem".
I know this is a bit of a rant but, I for one will never trust www.esupport.com again. I was lied to.

  1. Welcome to the blog Moppy! I'm sorry for your trouble. I've heard of e-support before. It's too bad the information they had did not match the performance of the bios. From what I can glean, they are the only place to get some older bioses. How much did they charge you for this? -- and of course I'm sure a refund is out of the question or you would probably not have been so unhappy. Were you able to save backup of the old bios? Sadly, the board just probably doesn't support that 133/266 FSB. It certainly is possible that you have early version of a board that later supported that FSB. It is possible that your version and the faster FSB version supported the same bios, but that no bios will make it go faster. Of course e-support should have been able to tell you of this possibility, since bios seems to be their business. I did a google groups search and evidently they are the only source for some of the was older Award bioses. Good luck. I'm sorry but IMHO the only way to use that newer CPU is to get a newer motherboard -- you certainly may be able to get "not" the latest and greatest that will still support the CPU but that will not cost an arm and a leg.

  2. Well I have an update. They offered a refund just now. I just sent an email accepting the refund. Now let's see if I get it. I will post again as soon as I know for sure.
