1) If you thought you had seen it all when it comes to interesting places to put solar cells, think again. At first glance this seems pretty far out there as presented here http://www.fastcompany.com/ their idea is to replace roads and parking lots with durable solar panels. Seems to have problems like traction, extreme weight of some trucking. But, hey why not sidewalks, parking garage roofs, light show patios, there must be many other applications.
2) Looks like those on glass computer generated displays are soon to our car windshields, I guess it was inevitable the military already has some. Why not have the major car companies start a gadget race for space on my windshield, I’m ready just what I wanted my car looks at my eyes, translates where I am looking and draws circles around what it thinks I am looking for. http://www.popsci.com
3) The evolution of space travel is sure getting mixed up these days. The space race is definitely warming up again China, Japan, India, of course North Korea, along with several other countries are rushing ahead with various programs. The U.S. seems to be backing down in general, but there is hope! In the U.S. what we do best is private industry, they are smelling the money and they are going for it. Here is an interesting article with video about the new citizen’s astronauts program, planning to put people in space in the next year or so. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com
4) This caught my eye thinking it was a good idea, and then having second thoughts. They are talking about using genetics to alter mosquitoes in a way to use them to deliver vaccines to fight diseases usually carried by mosquitoes. I am worried thinking about the whole mutation thing, so many ecological disasters created by bringing in one animal to control a pest, only to have them become a bigger pest. It would probably sell a lot of books for the conspiracy buffs, government altered mosquitoes delivering something extremely evil to the people. http://www.cnn.com
5) I have been waiting for this awhile now, the United States is launching a new division of the military, and it is about time… meet USCybercom. We are fielding a new cyber army to contend with all of the threats being launched at our cyber structure from foreign countries. Being a fan of evolution, I would like to see this morph into one hundred of our finest gamers, and a hundred of their best in a big room in two different countries playing a computer game called “War of the World”. Whenever one country wins a round, they get to make a law that must be obeyed by both countries, whoever wins the next round can either make a new law or revoke the last law. It is just an idea. But, it does look like there will be a new place for geeks in the army. http://news.bbc.co.uk

Microsoft removes hardware virtualization barrier to running XP Mode | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com
Effective immediately, Windows XP Mode no longer requires hardware virtualization technology, Microsoft officials said today. XP Mode is a feature of Windows 7 Professional or higher that allows companies to run XP applications that are incompatible with Windows 7 in a virtual environment.
This is great news for those that wanted to run XP on their Windows 7 computer.
I guess I have to try this and see how it works.

1) One of the big problems with wind, and solar energies is intermittency wind stops blowing, or clouds or night break the sun shine. I was surprised to find that that problem was solved many years ago. Seems there has been an electric company in Alabama using this technology since the ‘80s, basically they are using a technique of storing compressed air underground to balance their energy peaks. Currently, this technology is attracting a lot of attention link here http://www.wired.com
2) This is a link to an article Troll sent me, thanks Troll, this field of nanotechnology just twists the idea of what is physically possible in so many directions. We have been seeing the trend of smaller and smaller devices defying the concept that smaller is weaker, instead in most cases we see smaller is also more powerful. While there is always going to be a comfort level associated with size reduction, my fingers are already too big for a lot of stuff. The payoff is how much you can get into the box. There has been a new never before seen nanotube phenomenon observed that may lead to many energy applications. http://news.bbc.co.
3) One of what seems to me to be a big downside to technology is data mining and its ability to invade my space. Most of this type of thing will never affect me in any way, but I still don’t like it on principal, to me it just seems wrong. This link is to an article is about the new billboard type of sign, hooked to a camera it sees you coming, profiles your appearance then changes the ad to target its assessment of who it thinks you are. How long before it is doing facial analysis looking at what you bought for the last year and checking your bank account as part of its processing. http://www.thesun.co.uk
4) This is sort of a follow up on something I put up a week or two back it was an article about a solar cell manufacturing improvement saving need for rare earths, I referenced China and the coming shortage. This article goes into that a bit deeper. I still think there is some opportunity here for a smart investor. http://news.yahoo.com
5) As usual when I get to the geek link I am at definite risk of not having a lot of grip on what it all means. But, I was impressed by some of the claims made by this article. While a little fuzzy about if capability equals reality. Any way check out the new super whatever router http://finance.yahoo.com

The FCC Wants You to Test Your Broadband Speeds | Epicenter | Wired.com
The FCC is asking the nation’s broadband and smartphone users to use their broadband testing tools to help the feds and consumers know what speeds are actually available, not just promised by the nations’ telecoms.
I'm all for this test! I know when I lived in Big Lake, (Alaska) I was told we get 8MB downloads speeds, and I never got over 5 down when I ran a test.
I also think that you can't use a test your ISP supplies, because it might be controlled. ;)
More on this later!

1) It seems like every time I go looking around these days I find some sort of new revolutionary new item that is going to solve everything regarding our energy problems. I can’t wait for one of these to start making a dent in the market. I think once one of these discoveries like the Bloom box comes out as an ice breaker, making a profit proving market concept, all heck is going to break out. Check out this new one wow! http://www.physorg.com
2) This is a follow up on a link I put up a week or two back about the Nintendo game on ebay selling for $13,000 dollars. Well let’s just say it pays to have an intact factory seal. Might want to check your attic after reading this one. http://videogames.yahoo.com
3) It has been quite awhile since I put up anything about watching T.V. on the computer; this is about Hulu and sort of demonstrates the problem with the internet vs. money. What we eventually wind up with in regards to copyright laws and the internet most likely will not be anything close to what we are used to now. I am already worried, planning to remain calm, but expecting to have trouble maintaining my cool for long. http://www.aolnews.com
4) This is a subject I just cannot get enough of these days; I am referring to multiverse theory. The entire world of physics is in constant turmoil these days. If you are following this subject you might want to read this article. Goes into some interesting areas, like comparing infinities which may prove to solve, or at least shed some light on various conflicts. http://www.newscientist.com
5) I have started making my own yogurt, and kefir these days stuff I like but find expensive in the stores. Anyway, doing some basic research on probiotics I ran across this and thought I would put it up. Not many people realize just how non-human we humans are. http://www.mnn.com
6) When it comes to these subjects I find out doing each other over and over, nothing competes with computer memory advances. Here is another of those just think about this a moment. I already have a 750gig hard drive, now I read this new advancement will increase that by somewhere between 1,000 and one million times. How long before there is a one million terabyte hard drive at Fry’s, for $99.99? http://www.pcworld.com

1) Kind of hard to not open the week with the Bloombox after all the hype started off with the Sixty-Minutes unveiling last week after our show. Going to post two links one to an article in the Christen Science Monitor, I was Googling around looking for skeptics must be a little early. I could not find any negative reviews, but I am sure they are coming. Hope this is as advertised we sure could use a decent breakthrough. This has so much going for it; it is already proven, saves on fossil fuels, can power my electric car, saves on need to run new power lines, helps national security by breaking up the grid, looks to be cost effective, could be adapted to condos and apartments, as well as houses, lots of small and large business applications, can be adapted to renewable energy sources, solves power distribution issues in undeveloped countries, increases military flexibility, and I am sure a lot more. Monitor Article http://www.csmonitor.com 60 Minutes Segment http://www.cbsnews.com
2) This is another of those where the headline did its job, how could I pass on “Smart salad dressing’ could save Venice”. Other than the obvious visuals dealing with gondoliers and Good Seasons, I have been following the related issues of Venice, Climate Change, and sea rise for a long time I am extremely curious as to how we will deal with that situation. This might prove to be an answer. Looks like it would be fairly simple if it worked as they hope, would be cheaper than the flood gates, I would think. http://www.telegraph.co.uk
3) It has been a while since I put up one of those “if I had billions of dollars I want to buy one of these” sites. This one even has a green side to it. This something I would just move on to get a few slips in temperate climates and become a harbor rat. When I first clicked on the site I thought the picture was a model, until I saw the reference to the fork lift, and the guy inside cleaning the window. The push to solar is heating up, and diversifying. http://www.csmonitor.com
4) This is one of those stories that I find disturbing to the point I am glad to be getting older, and most likely will be in the check-out line about the time things get unbearable. This is about how in Great Briton they are weaponizing classical music. Not for the military, the police are using it to control people. I don’t know why the whole Orwellian movement in England bothers me so much, but it does. The idea of controlling, and manipulating the people by the government just seems wrong to me, can newspeak, and thought police be far behind. http://reason.com
5) For my weekly geek link this week I thought this might offer some insight as to just how vulnerable we may be when it comes to the potential cyber-war I keep hearing about. I mean if this article is correct about the guys who are supposedly funneling all that black budget money into high conspiracy projects dealing with new super stealthy technologies. If they have access to the money, and this is the best they can do to keep up with computer technology in their main offices, what shape are the lesser agencies in. http://abcnews.go.com
6) Just had to toss this in for all of those guys out there with GPS units wondering what the girl behind the voice looks like, check it out here. http://www.smh.com

Microsoft warns over rogue Security Essentials • The Register
Security essentials 2010 is a piece of software Microsoft said installs a fake virus scanner on your machine and]monitors and blocks processes it doesn't like.

NASA Extends the Internet Out Into Space
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station received a special software upgrade this week - personal access to the Internet and the World Wide Web via the ultimate wireless connection. Expedition 22 Flight Engineer T.J. Creamer made first use of the new system Friday, when he posted the first unassisted update to his Twitter account, @Astro_TJ, from the space station. Previous tweets from space had to be e-mailed to the ground where support personnel posted them to the astronaut's Twitter. (source: nasa.gov)
My big question is: Why can't we all get wireless internet here on Earth? They can get wireless internet in space!

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: They Don't Call Them "Essentials" For Nothing
Windows 7 is an impressive and refined OS with fun and productive new features. (In fact, I award it a rare 5-out-of-5 stars in my own review.) But there are some important pieces missing. And while we might debate Microsoft's rationale for not including these solutions in Windows, the truth is, they're easy enough to find and install separately. Best of all, they're free.
Some of these are very useful, I use most of them. (I use Pidgin IM for Messenger.) However the rest are very cool.
Microsoft Security Essentials is now my Anti-Virus of choice. It's free and works just as well as any you can pay for. There are version for Windows XP and both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows 7 & Vista.
Enjoy, AlaskaJoe

MagicJack dials wrong number in legal attack on Boing Boing Boing Boing
Gadget maker MagicJack recently lost a defamation lawsuit that it filed against Boing Boing. The judge dismissed its case and ordered it to pay us more than $50,000 in legal costs.
I have said on the show before I never could get my MagicJack working and I tried it on 3 computers here to no avail. When I called support I got no joy out of them and when asked to have my MagicJack replaced I was ignored by 2 support people. I gave up and through it out.

DailyTech - Broadband Providers Complain as March 17 FCC Broadband Plan Unveiling Nears
Reuters reports that the FCC's national broadband plan is set to be unveiled on March 17 to Congress. The plan hopes to bring affordable and fast broadband internet access to the 90 million Americans who lack service today.
Last week, the FCC announced that it is aiming for nationwide broadband speeds of 100Mbps
That would be nice, however the ISP's are saying they can't get those speeds in the next 10 years. MY question to them is WHY NOT?
We shall see!

FCC survey: Americans need broadband basics
"The Federal Communications Commission's first-ever survey on Internet usage and attitudes concludes that those who aren't connected today need to be taught how to navigate the Web, find online information that is valuable to them and avoid hazards such as Internet scams."
Just my opinion, but I think a lot of people who are already on the Internet need this training, too.

1) The breakthroughs for green tech seem to be coming along at a pretty fast clip these days. Sometimes the advances signifying the most promise seem to run under the radar. The main talking point about this new solar advancement revolves around manufacturing technique, and materials. The main point I thought was not using Rare Earth Minerals, something I think we will see more about these shortages future news, especially regarding the economic world power structure. (See next link). http://www.eetasia.com
2) It seems that our attention is always focused on the big stuff, we think about running out of oil, peak oil. Constantly worried about how short supply will affect world politics. It creates wars both economic, and military. This article and its rather ominous statements of fact about high tech industries and rare earth minerals, they are mostly coming from China, who is talking about a shortage and eliminating their export, it should be a wake-up call for our government if we can avoid our distractions. It might also point to an investment opportunity, if you can find a way to exploit it. http://news.yahoo.com
3) One of the things I like to do on line it to take those little tests, of one sort or another, you know how many states can you identify, just the general knowledge type. So when I saw this I have to admit I was drawn in and totally humiliated. Anyway I just had to post it here; it is a copy of an eighth grade graduation test from 1895. The link I chose starts with a comment and link, to snopes.com, I think they are right, the guys at snopes went a little over with their defensive simplification; they seemed to miss the point, just my interpretation. Next week I will post the answers for the Google-challenged. http://www.rense.com
4) I worked with para-transit for several years, driving people with various types of disability around Las Vegas, I suppose that is why I am attracted to advancements that help solve issues in those communities. This one is a twofer, think of a hybrid between an office chair, and a mountain bike, that is this wheel chair. Designed for rural settings, rocks, mud, sand, and dirt roads, there are many people in the world unable to walk, living in rural conditions that offer no choice other than dragging themselves on the ground, sometimes for miles. This is aimed at helping them. The unit is designed to be manufactured locally from new, and used bicycle parts for less than $200.00. The hope here is to provide local jobs, in addition to helping others with disabilities. http://news.cnet.com
5) My geek link for the week... one of my favorite web things is Google, I am always at least mildly interested by headlines concerning them. This fell into that category and thought it interesting. Looks like Google is going into the ISP business, or, well maybe not. There are evidently several layers to this announcement. Hope it all works out as planned. http://www.slate.com/

1) My green link for the week has to do with the clean water situation worldwide, and is currently being considered for use in Haiti. This is a system called a bio-reactor it uses bacteria to clean putrid water in about 24 hour. The green aspect of this revolves around water delivery, as an example the army is currently sending two of these to Afghanistan, they say that they can save a lot of gasoline currently used to deliver water for operations there. They are requesting the company producing them to send their prototype to Haiti to help with the recovery. http://www.wired.com
2) This is one of those technological advancements that I remember seeing in many sci-fi movies, reading about in several books. The author always has to come up with a way for all the different species of aliens to talk to our hero. Somehow I never thought I would see the universal translator in my life time, but then forgot about Google. The Google techs are working hard on the problem, and they say in a couple of years they will introduce the translator phone. You speak English in to your phone it is translated and comes out as verbal Spanish at the other end, and reverses the process back to you. I would guess the cell phone app is already being designed. http://technology.
3) This is a follow up from last week, I am still all wrapped up in this announcement that time control technology has been achieved, and perused by several countries around the world. I ran across another interview with David Lewis Anderson on the net, you can listen to this one without paying, or subscribing at Whitley Strieber’s Dreamland. You will need to click on the listen link then select the correct one, it is titled “Is Time Travel Already Happening”? http://www.unknowncountry.com
4) Today is the twentieth anniversary of a famous photograph; this is one of those things that make you think about just how small our life footprint is in the overall scheme of the universe. Taken from four billion miles in space by Voyager 1, just as they were shutting down the offices. The photo was quite sensational when it came out, called the Pale Blue Dot. It shows Earth as two or three pixels on a photograph measuring 14 feet wide. The link is at NPR and has a audio link attached if you prefer to listen to the story and interview. http://www.npr.org
5) My geek link this week illustrates just how totally out of touch I am with this, this is from EEF’s (Electronic Frontier Foundation) twentieth anniversary bash, being covered by Macworld. Features a video with Adam Savage from Mythbuster’s fame. The video is in two parts, I watched it all, and was left totally clueless, but that’s okay. http://www.tuaw.com

New, voluntary Windows 7 antipiracy update coming
If the update spots known activation exploits and the copy of Windows 7 is found to be nongenuine, the antipiracy notifications built into the OS will spring to life. PCs running genuine Windows 7 software with no activation exploits won't see any prompts since the update runs quietly in the background. . During the quarterly validation, Windows will download the latest "signatures" that are used to identify new activation exploits (think antivirus software). The WAT update will run a check and repair weekly, however, if it discovers tampering, disabling, or missing licensing files.

1) Since I started doing the show it has been increasing hard to impress me with new technologies, and/or products, but this really grabbed me. While it is not very new, due to cost and production methods it has been out of reach for most applications. Seems they are now coming into the main stream. I am talking about aerogels just think about this statement from the article, if you completely insulate a three bedroom home with them, you can heat it with a candle, there is a problem though, it will get to hot. Article with links here http://www.popsci.com
2) This surprised me, say happy birthday Youtube, today as of my writing this Feb. 06-2010 Youtube is five years old. My sensation of time is definitely getting twisted, it feels to me that they have been around a lot longer, guess it is just me, anyway article here. http://blog.searchenginewatch.com
3) This is a link to a show host from Coast to Coast, hosted by Art the other night January 31st, if you missed it and have stream link you should check it out, very good. The guest was David Lewis Anderson a time researcher. He is saying they have built a time control machine. He said China, India, and Japan among others have the technology. Very interesting show, scary if true, not sure how to verify the statements. If anyone has more information please let me know. http://www.andersoninstitute.com
4) Let me start here saying please don’t send me email about this, I know I am conspiracy oriented at times, and I have a rep for disliking cell phones. But, when I think about the tobacco industries, among many others that manipulate data, especially here in the U.S. in the name of profits. Heck, I hear some think swine flu and global warming fall into that category. Well if you are willing to consider all the data, be informed and think for yourself, you might read this. It is a recent article, published February 2010. http://www.gq.com
5) I got this from an email Troll sent me, like most geek links I get most of it sort of slides in one eye and out the other. But, I get the gist of it, about a very old bug (17 yrs.) in Windows that is finally being addressed. http://news.bbc.co.uk/

eSATA is faster than USB 3.0 — at least right now
USB 3.0 brings a host of other improvements over the 2.0 spec and eSATA, more power efficient, allowing more power-hungry bus-powered devices and better power management when devices are idle. USB 3.0 also can theoretically hit 600 MB/s. But right now it’s not the ultimate external data transfer protocol. That title belongs to eSATA.

Sorry About the Amish Heater Scam
Sorry about the Amish heater scam, hope everyone was smarter than me. I should have learned by now that, anything sounding like a very good deal needs to pass the Google test. Hope no one was taken in. Here is a link to a site describing the scam. http://www.consumeraffairs.com
Links From The Gregg Zone
1) This is an article about the advancement of car sharing companies. I have linked several of them from Agassi’s electric car company, to the Zip Car here in the Zone. This article is sort of encouraging, seeing interest in this area. How long before the perfect business plan is developed and put into action. There are several links in the story worth looking at. http://earth2tech.com
2) I am going to toss in an extra green link this week; this is to an article in Science Daily discussing the problem of growing crops for bio fuels instead of food. Basically another approach of using waste products, I think this may be part of the solution, I like recycling in any form. http://www.sciencedaily.com
3) I ran across this yesterday and thought it was interesting in several ways. When it comes to material science, and the discovery of new materials necessary to build new technology there are few more important factors than weight, and strength. So finding a new metal lighter than aluminum, but stronger than steel, impressed me. The applications seem endless, the article references run from body armor and prosthetics, to car bumpers, but is seems like there would be many more. http://www.livescience.com
4) I saw this earlier in the week, have not had time to look into it, but plan to soon. I first linked to this at least a year ago, the availability dates went by, and I forgot about it. Well evidently I missed the debut, looks like it is up and running. I am referring to Microsoft’s World Wide Telescope, much like Google Maps, but for the night sky, stitching most of the world’s telescopes together, and putting them on your computer. I am looking forward to that next big meteoroid shower, solar flare, and more. http://www.worldwidetelescope.org
5) This is something Joe sent me, I was going to set up the free trial this morning, but got side tracked. Planning to do it soon though, talking about using Windows 7 media center for XM Radio. I listen to more radio than watch T.V., so this may be very cool for me. My biggest question is can I run it in the background while using the computer to surf, or play games. Guess I will find out, anyway here is a link for instructions at How to Geek. http://www.howtogeek.com
6) For my geek link this week I ran across this rather cool search site, what it does is tile Google and Bing side by side. Enter one search term, in one box and you can compare the results, or just find more results. I played with it a while and like it quite a bit, now I have to figure out how to make it my default search site. Or at least find out if I can, know how let me know. http://www.bingandgoogle.com/

Amish Built Heat Surge Room Heater 2 Day Sale Down From $298.00 To $58.00 With Code
I ran across this in U.S.A. Today, the Amish are hurting because of the recession, and are offering the new Heat Surge Fireless Flame room heater for $58.00, 2 days (48 hours) only starting this morning at 8:00 am, with the code FP12132. Website http://www.amishfireplaces.com/
This heater uses the new hi-tech heat turbine technology to provide 5,119 BTU's at 9 cents per hour, on the high setting. Enough to heat 1,500 square feet for about $1.00 per day, or $2.16 per day at full blast. I have talked to two people who have this in the past and they were very satisfied.
It comes fully assembled out of the box, just plug it in and turn it on. I have seen one and it was quite attractive, looks like a fireplace in an oak cabinet, and seemed to be very well made. The Amish are only making the cabinet, and installing the heater. But, they do everything by hand, and are very quality conscious. This offer is only good for two days, so if you are interested you will need to be quick. Enjoy it whatever it is, Gregg

1) Starting off with a little regression back to CES, this was one if the things I noticed walking around the show. One of the buzz words or terms that were flashing around was green energy. Another related term was home energy, especially referring to saving due to a greater understanding of how much energy the home was using and more importantly where it was being used. This is an interesting link on that whole area, do click around the links, a lot of interesting stuff here http://ces.cnet.com
2) This is probably my favorite areas when it comes to zone links, specifically the “I want one of those” links. This one comes thanks to Troll thank god there is no way I could afford one of these, so I won’t have to worry too much. But, as far as the cool factor. And that, “I wish I would be around long enough to see this developed”, maybe into a fad. Something just taking off due to a basic practicability, sort of like the new V.W. Bug taking over the market in the ‘70’s. That is something that would make me envious of the next generation. http://www.smartplanet.com
3) This is one Joe sent me a week or so ago. I like keeping up on these medical advancements, they just keep getting better. This is one on using the conteversial stem cell technology in giving sight to a kid born blind. It seems odd to me that someone would have to go all the way to China to take advantage of these breakthroughs. We are destine to lose our technological edge as a country if we continue to let antiquated belief systems continue to get in the way of our progress, just my perspective don’t write. http://www.mirror.co.uk/
4) This line of physics leading to M-theory or multiverse theory is one of those areas that keep me interested, not so much for all the presented hype that goes along with most of the articles related to it, dealing with the math and theory. The part that keeps me coming back are the obvious questions of how does it relate to consciousness, the human questions of how do I fit I as a conscious entity fit into this matrix. http://www.astrobio.net
5) Time for that link that just zooms by me, leaving me thinking wow that’s cool, followed by what’s cool. Not sure what effect this may have on the world, but I keep hearing about virtualization from people in the radio show rooms, so when I saw this and realized it was only a day or two old, it just seemed like it a was postable link. http://blogs.zdnet.com

1) Starting with what looks to be a positive sign in the green energy field. Hope it becomes a trend. It looks like Stirling Energy Systems is getting ready to start up their first plant in Arizona. They are not the only solar supplier using the Stirling Engine. I like seeing small energy companies like this just starting up, with out much encouragement. If they are successful it may start a movement toward this type of energy production. Maybe even a gold rush type investment bubble, it is the Home Depot model I am looking for lean it against the garage and plug it in. Interesting article, a few of the links are informative. http://earth2tech.com
2) Being still close to the beginning of the year I still have an attraction to those prediction sites, when I found this one I thought I would pass it on. No doomsday, end of the world here. Fairly sane and reasonable forecasts and predictions for technology in 2010, I thought his daily video was fairly well done and interesting. http://www.jumpthecurve.net
3) This is about another area of interest to me space, our technological capability's are increasing exponentially. This looks to be another of one those jumps. There is a company currently building a plasma rocket engine that will cut down the travel time to Mars from two years to about forty days. I would say as they are supposedly beginning production now at this rate it looks like we may land someone on Mars in my lifetime WOW! http://www.cbc.ca
4) This article I found on language death I found it sad, unfortunately I think he is right that it is inevitable his case for this seems well thought out. Everything in our world is determined by economics, not much we can do about that. I do think language preservation is important, and study as to origin and such is necessary, but like they say at what level, and at how much cost. He wrote what looks to be an interesting book. I looked it up at free library, but it is not free and price ridicules. http://io9.com
5) For my geek link of the week, the news that there is a geek shortage, here in the U.S. to the point of being considered a national security emergency. Just my twisted point of view, but when we passed laws enabling everything to go overseas, to save a buck. We had to know we would pay in the end. Oh well an interesting read, maybe job security for some, opportunity for others, just hope it is in time. http://www.wired.com

Privacy is dead on Facebook. Get over it.
Ripping the privacy carpet out from under its users is the kind of shifty behavior that will no doubt result in lawsuits topping that of Facebook’s Beacon debacle back in 2007, when user purchases and other Internet activity popped up in Facebook's "news feed"

Better Gmail 2 - Free download for FireFox
This collection of popular Greasemonkey scripts makes tweaking Gmail's look and behavior as simple as installing a Firefox add-on. The 15 features in Better Gmail 2 allow for a deeper level of customization than Google can provide, even though the introduction of Google Labs in Gmail demotes Better Gmail from "must-have" to "still pretty cool."

1) I was sort of hoping to start off my green link with something super cool from CES, but in that area I was rather disappointed at the show. Lots of whiz-bang fancy stuff, most of which reminded me of a movie sequel, new twist on an old story. So when I started looking around and spotted some news on something I had used along time ago. And, I remembered thinking it was a keeper back then and, I saw the article was about their success; that they were attracting more money and interest I thought I would bring it back. http://www.konarka.com
2) One more CES link, because I know we will be talking about the show, and I don’t want to over do it here, I may use some other CES related stuff next week. One of the biggest new hype products this year; was 3D T.V. I was not very impressed, nor was Joe. We talked about it quite a bit and we both had the same ho-hum feeling about it. I thought this article was very insightful, they were not very impressed either, and he made some very good points about the industry. I think he was right on with his analysis about why the industry will lose in the short term, but probably force us into acceptance eventually. http://www.thedailymaverick.co.
3) Moving on from the show, this is a link that Troll sent last week that is one of the coolest I have seen in quite awhile. Our friend in Playa Del Rey has been so wound up in this he has been at the site for many hours every day all week. While I like it a lot, I’m not quite that hooked. But, if you are into photography you really need to check this out. In the past I used a link on this Gigapixel Technology. But, it was nothing like this super high resolution, 18 gigapixel, 360 degree spherical panorama, photo taken from the top of the T.V. antenna in Prague. Full zoom capability you can zoom in on someone miles away and see their facial features. Just amazing detail be sure not to miss this one. Thanks Troll, you sure did well this time.http://www.360cities.net
4) This is one that Earl might be interested in if he is not already aware of it. It has been said you cannot reinvent the wheel; well the guy’s at MIT may have something to say about that. They have just unveiled The Copenhagen Big Wheel, for bicycles. This is a very impressive bit of engineering; it is comparable to the Swiss Army Knife, a lot of useful stuff crammed into a small space. http://web.mit.edu
5) My geek link for the week is not totally computer related, but has a definite geek appeal. This is a video site called Engineering TV, an online video program by engineers for engineers. Focused on technical B2B engineering topics, there is an archive in addition to the current offerings, very nice site. http://engineeringtv.com/

Life Without Cable or Satellite TV Is Easier Than You Think
If you only watch a handful of the 200+ DirecTV or cable channels you pay for. To see whether you can survive without the pricey service, Just try and go without it. I wondered why we all don't just turn off traditional TV.
I know VegasGregg (Links from the Gregg Zone!) dropped his cable TV a couple of months ago and has not looked back.
This article has some good points and it answers a few questions I have been asked, in reference to watching sports on the Internet.
Take a look, some time in the near future we all might be turning off our cable TV.

1)Starting off with the green link of the week, this is a pretty interesting article about a teenage kid winning a science fair by coming up with a solution to a problem that has been around for a while now. I have a personal dislike for those plastic grocery bags, they last for ever in the land fills, and wreak general havoc on the environment. It will be interesting to see if an 16 year old, 11th grader can scoop the environmental scientists. http://news.therecord.com
2)Going to have to pardon me if I get on a little bit of a rant here, but if there is any truth to this article, well let me just say it goes to show how twisted we have become, and illustrates if we destroy the planet we have nobody to blame but our selves. It seems when they first started setting up nuclear power plants there was a decision made to use uranium instead of thorium, because of the byproduct plutonium, which could be turned into bombs. Thorium's advantage over uranium? It is more efficient, vastly cleaner (creates minuscule amounts of waste needing to be stored for a few hundred years only), it's much cheaper (so common we have an exhaustible supply), and it's impossible to have a meltdown. http://www.wired.com
3)I am tossing this in just in case anyone is interested in supplementing their income using eBay, a interesting article on someone who did that very well this Christmas, just by paying attention to what was happening around him using a little luck and parlaying it into a several thousand dollars.

4)It has been a while since I brought up U.F.O's there seems to be a lot of new interest in the field, new T.V. Programs and just a general uptick in the media. While this is not media oriented I thought it very interesting. There has been a new web site set up for professional, and amateur astronomers to report odd things they see while studying the night sky. It will be interesting to occasionally check in and see what is being reported. http://www.astrobio.net
5)Here is another of those in the zone items I ran across, while new to me I am sure others have checked it out. I had heard there was a new T.V. Show out there focusing on, well, lets just say subjects that interest me. I have not turned the T.V. on since giving up Cox Cable, but when I found a reference the show talking about Alaska's area 51, well I just had to Google. It is available at YouTube, I am referring to Jessy Ventura's investigation show "TRU", here is the YouTube link, it is complete, but in four segments. I will be looking for more of these shows very soon. http://www.youtube.com
6)Okay for my geek link of the week a quickie on how to save your electronic gadget, phone or whatever when you drop in in your beer, toilet, the lake or whatever. I would be really curious to find out if this really works, what the heck it's worth a try. http://lifehacker.com Oh! and a P.S. - Happy belated binary day, but that's okay next weeks show will be on the second of several binary days this year.
