Links from the Gregg Zone

1) Okay, I like it when I can start with a double header. The guys at M.I.T. have sure visited the Gregg Zone on a lot of occasions in the past, and now they are in focus again. It seems they have come up with a portable desalination plant that can be easily shipped into disaster zones, or anyplace else they wish. I am sure the military is interested since clean water is heavy and hard to transport. http://www.reuters.com

2) This one I found made me think instantly of Earl, air bags have been around for a while now so I suppose it was just a matter of time until they were adapted to bicycles. I have mixed feelings on this one, here in Las Vegas wearing anything extra in the summer can be a problem, but then if it saves your life, or quality of life I suppose it would be worth it. http://www.wired.com

3) Now about the whole space thing, if I wanted to go I could… maybe next year. Wow, that sounds like one of those unattainable dreams about the future. While not that long ago it seemed just a little far-fetched for me, if I had the money I could buy a ticket. This is a link to the new space port just completed in New Mexico. Accompanying video is very cool be sure to check out the other video links on the groundbreaking, I was surprised that they finished on time, it took them less than 1 ½ years to complete. http://www.bbc.co.uk

4) It was about 2-3 years ago I was touting the new prototype printers that replicate objects by printing up layers of assorted materials to build an object, instead of print on paper. At that time I was postulating on how many years it would be before I could have one at home. If I was to guess then I do not think my answer would have been about three years. But, it looks like they are going to come out very soon. http://www.telegram.com/

5) For my geek link I ran across this, not sure how many out there are web site builders, or just how well this information was broadcast, but just in case you missed it I thought I would put it up here. Sounds like it could be an expensive trip down a road that could be avoided. http://arstechnica.com

Today's App Corner

Today we have the mobile app version of Zillow, the real estate site, for iOS and Android. So if you want to know what your house might be worth (and see a graph of the plummet in value over the past few years), or what your neighbors house is worth, this app is made for you.

On another note, remember when parents used TV as a babysitter? Well the modern parent has a more convenient device. Yes, this article tells all about iPhone using tots!

1) I kept hearing about how the stats on the Chevy Volt were tweaked. So I started looking around a bit, and found this interesting article about Motor Trends test drive they say all the chatter was much adieu about nothing. Impressive article, test, and car, if I was in the market and had the bucks, I would love to try one. http://blogs.motortrend.com/

2) I ran across this article on DNA fabrication, I have always been suspect of the amount of power we put into DNA found at crime investigations. Always seemed very easy to frame somebody. Then in court the DNA evidence seems to be the end of the argument, like the article points out ity is easier to plant DNA than it is to plant finger prints. Just something to think about, next time you are writing a crime novel. http://www.haaretz.com

3) It looks like the Germans might be giving Google Maps some competition, they are in process of creating a 3D map of the entire Earth. It looks like we may soon need glasses for our GPS, unless they get the no glasses model out soon. http://www.bbc.co.uk

4) This just seemed to be a zone topic. I can see a few comparisons here, while the subject is about the dijnn, reading the article it was hard not to think about exorcisms. The dijnn are what some parts of the world consider the genie in the bottle. Glancing through an international newspaper site can bring up some interesting stuff, here is the link on the djinn http://www.nst.com. And, as a bonus from the same source different paper here is an article about forest fires causing Yeti’s to move into new territory and starting a war with the local bears http://english.ruvr.ru/

1) Last up for the week an article about Microsoft bashing open office, the video looks like it was done by a professional political attack ad agency. Not sure where I come down on this, as I have not used open office other than my short venture into Ubuntu. The short time I used I did not have that much trouble, but my requirements for a word processor are nothing compared to most. http://www.theregister.co.uk

1) Found an interesting site looking at the other half of the electric car problem. Charging stations; it looks like this area is heating up, this article refers to startup charging companies starting around the country, and there are embedded links included for most of the listed projects. If I was much younger looking for opportunity I might look at a business installing charging stations for apartment buildings, and condos. http://www.green-energy-news.com

2) As long as I am on the car topic, how about Google’s new auto-automobile drives itself, in traffic, using freeways. I watched some competition on auto-piolet cars a while back, but they were on a special track, not in traffic. http://www.nytimes.com

1) I have put up links about the crystal caves in Mexico a few times in the past, just noticed the National Geographic is going to have a special on them airing tonight. The link is just announcing the airing; I will have to wait for it to come out on the net to watch it. http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/episode/into-the-lost-crystal-caves-4636#tab-Overview

4) This is a very interesting article about some upcoming meteoroid showers. Looks like next year may be the show stopper. I do not usually get to excited about them, always curious but not enough to drive away from the lights. I may make an exception next year. http://www.examiner.com

5) The geek link for the week is about an entire room becoming a computer display, every table, the floor, even the people. Not quite sure where the value of all this is, but if it can be done with current technology I suppose somebody somewhere is doing it. http://news.cnet.com
