HP equips desktop PCs with SSDs for faster Windows 7 boots

"The 64GB SSD on the HP Compaq 6005 Pro will be used to store and run Windows and commonly-accessed applications."

The 6005 Pro will also come with a larger conventional hard disk drive connected via SATA interface for storing data and documents.

I think this is a great idea.

An SSD for the OS and apps and a hard drive for your data. I love the idea.

I want one! :)

This sounds like a very cool program. If your student qualifies this is a nice way to get Windows 7.

Three 911 documentaries you might not have seen...

Here is a 51 minute long documentary of homemade video of 9/11 that I had not seen before….. actually it seems to be over a year old http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2947888180526230130
Part 2
http://video.google.es/videoplay?docid=-3694706480383919917#

This second video is in four parts and is all about the four planes that attempted the strikes flights 11 75 175 and 93

1) For my opening green link this week I am going to use an article in BBC sent to me by Troll last week. I think it was the History Channel that had a few programs on these geo-transforming projects being presented in various forms. This is an interesting subject to look into if you are so inclined. We seem to be caught in a sort of technology loop needing new tech to save us from all the new tech. Seems we may be evolving the planet along with ourselves. This is an interesting place to start your research here, and also a good googling adventure for a slow afternoon. http://news.bbc.co.uk
2) Speaking of evolution, here is an article from the wall street journal talking about something that definitely fits, when talking about how technology is causing the human race to evolve. I found this rather disturbing at some level, there is something a little depressing about the generational shift caused by getting older. We want to sort of hang on to what we are familiar with. But, it makes me a little more comfortable thinking about leaving the planet in the next twenty years or so. Knowing I will be unable to adapt to the changes anyway, guess I can cancel the cryogenic plan. Any way pardon my drifting, an interesting read on technology and one of the evolutionary changes it is causing, even though that is not what the article is about, I am sure you will see my point. http://online.wsj.com
3) If this did not come from New Scientist I would not use it, but it does and it is very much in the news these days, so I am going to post the link. The article is about legalizing drugs in the U.S. I thought this was an odd place to find this article that seems to be pro-legalization. In my mind they make a lot of sense, it is something that needs to be addressed by our society. In my opinion the war on drugs is a total waste of money, time, resources, and creating criminals from our young. I was particularly struck by the comments, this is a magazine that would by its nature attract the better educated, and deep thinking readers on the net. The comments were mostly articulate, and overwhelmingly pro-legalization. http://www.newscientist.com
4) Wow here I go what a week last link about the war on drugs, and now right into 911, sorry about the politics Joe. But, we did just have an anniversary of the 911 event. I decided to spend that day catching up on what is new on that front. What I ran across was a recent English version of an Italian documentary currently showing in Europe. Sort of a Loose Change treatment, but I thought it was interesting to see what they think over seas about what happened, and how we handled it. The movie link is here http://video.google.com I also saved several other links, I am not using them here, but if you are interested drop me an email gregg@oncomputers.com use 911 for subject so I can sort them out, I will send them along.
5) As my geek offering this is something I got in an email, I looked at it tried to get a basic idea of what it was about. After five min of scanning for something that looked remotely familiar, and not finding it, I thought this must be the perfect place to put it. Just kidding it’s about a new open-source operating system that is supposed to make my life easier…Nine pages of geekese enjoy. http://www.haiku-os.org/

1) I have seen this concept before, but then it was just at the drawing board stage, now it seems it has advanced to a prototype testing phase, always a good sign. The first one I saw involved freeway off ramps hooked to street and traffic lights. That goes way beyond this, but this is a start, a speed bump generating some electric power at a burger king. Now, this is probably a just a necessary proof of concept, but it gets my vote as a definite maybe. http://www.foxnews.com
2) What the hey? As long as we are looking to go green at Burger King why not go over the edge, this is after all the Gregg Zone. Lets look into a green technology that can really make a difference like at McDonalds; we are talking in-vitro meat for your burger, and Chicken McNuggets. When you look at the carbon foot print, providing you can get past the yuck factor we can really save some environment here. And, what the heck who knows what is in that Big Mac anyway, for a while Jack was severing up Kanga & Roo. By the time the processing is over it may as well be in-vitro lab meat anyway. http://www.cnn.com
3) This is one that I suspect some may find very useful, I know I discovered it a little late in the game for my battle with Cox cable. I for one get quite agitated with these automated telephone systems, press this, then that, say yes, then no, feeling like a trained animal in a vaudeville show of some sort. Well if you want to get past it all and talk to a human quick, say at Dell Tech, or Wells Fargo this site is for you. Three days ago when I discovered it there were around 1,200 companies listed today it was over 1,300 so it is growing, there is a list of codes to get to a human being, much more than just press O, sometimes it is much more complicated, this one can save you some time, and maybe your sanity. http://www.gethuman.com
4) This one is an interesting sort of geeky subject bordering on the zone. A very interesting site, with the top ten weird computer systems. Systems based on everything from DNA to Billiard Balls, and Mold. When it comes to computing sometimes we get hung up on the paradigm of the moment. After all the subject goes back thousands of years, maybe in some regards for millennial. Any way it is always a good idea to try and expand ones view of a particular subject, or concept. A very good article to get those creative juices flowing here. http://www.impactlab.com
5) This is one of those things coming along that make Star Trek look like it is coming true in our life time. The universal translator; seems that at the moment it is only working in web browsers, well Fire Fox anyway it can recognize the language and automatically translate into your preferred language, 40 languages at the moment. Due to my pay grade I am not sure what is new about this, but the announcement was yesterday, so there must be something here, I have used the Google tool before. I guess the deal here is it is automatic, no need to click on a translate button. It will be very cool when this is all hooked into a small PDA you can carry around your neck when globe hopping, or maybe next year as an App for your phone. http://www.newscientist.com

Using Email Clients To Get To Gmail When Gmail Goes Down

"Personally, I use Outlook 2007 to download my email from a Google Apps account. This allows me to have full, dependable offline access. It allows me to periodically backup and archive my mail, protection against the rare case where Google might somehow delete my mail on their servers. It allows me to have easy access to search mail back for half a decade."

Gmail's web access was down for a couple of hours the other day. A lot of domains are now having Google host their email. I'm thinking of moving one of my domains there to see how I like it. Aaron already has 2 of his domains there.

By accessing your gmail using an email program like Thunderbird, or Outlook you can always read your mail even if Google's mail is down. (The POP still worked, the last time Gmail went down.)

Symantec: Posted code enables VoIP spying | Safe and Secure - CNET News

"Along with keyloggers that track what you type, now we have to worry about malicious software that listens in on our voice over Internet Protocol conversations."

The best way to avoid being infected with this or any other malware is to use good up-to-date security software and to be sure that your operating system and browser are updated. It's also a good idea to avoid clicking on e-mail attachments and consider using security software that warns you when you're about to visit a potentially malicious Web site.
