Quick summary: he'd enabled a feature on his feed at FeedBurner called the "awareness API", which shares feed data with other services like Podfeed and Podnova. The information was already public, I was just restating it for the journalist who was clarifying what she understood regarding podcast stats.
We've since clarified our policy regarding the awareness API here, and reaffirm that we will never share private data with anyone. We will also only share public info when talking to the press that is from publishers who've explicitly authorized us to do so.
