"News came yesterday that Linux users who used NVIDIA's drivers were in danger of being remotely exploited because a zero-day exploit code was released last week. " Not even Linux is safe these days! :( AlaskaJoe
The more fanatic free software advocates have long maintained that video drivers from NVidia and ATI (along with all sorts of other drivers) should be free software with source code easily available for review. Cases like this bolster their arguments. Open source code allows quick review of security and other issues that may be present and permits anyone to fix issues as they arise.
We are dependent on NVidia for a fix because this code is closed. That alone is to me a convincing argument for free software and source code access for all.
