Interesting that there would have to be an article. Updating to iOS4 is no different than any other major or incremental update. As to making a backup Apple has wisely made it an automatic part of the process. Basically the hard part is waiting for the huge download. Occasionally anti-virus or firewalls can interfere. Turn them off and try it again. Same process works for the iPod touch and if I understand it correctly, this time the update is free.
